“A thumping good read”
(Judges – Trade Association Forum Awards 2015)
Funeral Director Monthly is the official journal of the National Association of Funeral Directors.
First published in 1921 as the BUA Monthly, the black and white newsletter was dubbed the “official organ of the British Undertakers’ Association”. In newspaper style, it carried a series of reports on key national and regional Association meetings, general industry updates and members’ news, while advertising was in the form of undertakers’ and carriage masters’ professional and trade cards.
Almost 100 years later Funeral Director Monthly is now an A4-size, 80 page glossy magazine with a design that takes its reference from modern business publications, in the aim that Funeral Director Monthly would not look out of place on the shelves of WH Smith. It is the only ABC audited publication within the funeral sector with a certified readership of 3,477 in 2014. Classified advertising forms only 15% of the paid-for content of the magazine with display advertising now providing a significant proportion of the funding of the magazine’s production.
The magazine carries regular updates on the NAFD’s media/Parliamentary lobbying campaigns, regular features on education and professional development, sector news and the latest products and services. Each issue of Funeral Director Monthly carries news from member firms and a meetings/events calendar.
However, the repositioning of Funeral Director Monthly as a business publication has also seen the magazine’s editorial focus shift to more general business issues such as employment law changes, health and safety matters and even how funeral firms can embrace digital and social media.
In April 2015 Funeral Director Monthly won Best Association Newsletter at the prestigious Assocation Excellence Awards and, in July 2015, it was awarded Magazine of the Year at the Trade Association Forum Best Practice Awards and was described as “a thumping good read” by the judges.
